Tim Bray
Web geek and environmentalist with a camera at the bottom left corner of Canada. He/him.
I’m mainly on Fedi, @cosocial.ca@timbray. On this account I mostly post #blueskyabove photos; for more, if you’re not on Fedi try @timbray.cosocial.ca.ap.brid.gy

- I assume there are how-to-migrate-to-Blacksky docs somewhere? First step: Move PDS, right?

- Huh, @icegov.bsky.social is an interesting case. In the Fediverse, most instances probably wouldn’t host that account, but some would. The account would be broadly blocked, and some instances would probably block the hosting instance. Some folks would migrate between servers based on these choices.

- I thought the @sarahkendzior.bsky.social suspension was an interestingly nontrivial moderation scenario. I wrote up a little case study/explainer on how it might have been handled on Mastodon. Probably only for people who care about moderation nitty-gritty. www.tbray.org/ongoing/When...
- Dear World: Now is a good time to get off social media that’s becoming any combination of “less useful”, “less safe”, or “less fun”. I’ve been on Mastodon for 3 years and am convinced that right now, in late 2025, it’s the best place to go. Come join me. Here’s why. www.tbray.org/ongoing/When...

- Hmm: Ms Kendzior said: “the last things I posted were excerpts from my substack newsletter articles”. From her most recent “When I loved New York”: “for example, arrest war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu”. I wonder if that phrase gets you banned? sarahkendzior.substack.com/p/when-i-lov...
- Ok, it was just a guess; the only thing I found in recent newsletters (which she said she'd been posting excerpts of) that might set off a moderation tripwire). Been wrong before, will be again.
- WTF Sarah Kendzior?!

- Does Bluesky Social PBC publish any financial disclosures? I'm super interested in the economics of post-Twitter decentralized social media. (I'm similarly poking around the Fediverse and OMG it's complicated.)

- This Thu is the “IPTC Photo Metadata Conference 2025”, a free Zoom event open to all. I’m a speaker ( on #C2PA). Looks like it should be interesting for anyone interested in the tangle of issues about media provenance, #genAI, publishing workflow, social media, and so on. iptc.org/events/photo...

- Due to my persistent yelling about C2PA and provenance, I’ve been invited to speak at the IPTC Photo Metadata Conference 2025: iptc.org/events/photo-metadata - September 18th. It’s a free Zoom thing, so if you’re interested in this stuff, sign up and drop by.

- Hmm… The Fedi/Mastodon world is at least as “progressive” and I have quite a few followers, I participate in sports chatter and have never seen this crap. We even have a #HNOM hashtag (“hockey night on Mastodon”) which is cheery and lighthearted and fun. Not obvious why bsky should be different…

- Bluesky needs to stop stripping the C2PA provenance data from EXIF in uploaded media. Pass the word. Also, see github.com/bluesky-soci...
- (There's much more to do in the long term to support C2PA properly, but for now, just leave the C2PA manifest in the EXIF and let the emerging tool ecosystem work with it.)

- Hmm that repost of my bridged account lost the link to the blog: www.tbray.org/ongoing/When... Also the link to the example of genAI propaganda businesspeople are now seeing. [Trigger warning: if you love books this will be painful.] docs.google.com/presentation...
