I am raising a kind, caring child who is hurt and confused whenever she sees someone behave in a mean or selfish way, and this gentle little person is growing up in a world half-full of loud, cruel, racist idiots who have more empathy for corporations than for actual human beings. It breaks my heart

What Robert Redford contributed to American films via Sundance is genuinely immeasurable. He was also an extraordinarily talented director--Ordinary People and Quiz Show are two of the best American studio movies of their eras--and an actor who somehow wore his incredible charisma almost shyly. RIP.
Richard is a truly brilliant critic and I want to read his writing forever.

This is such a terrible decision. I agree with absolutely everything Adam says below. These are three of the best writers around.

I really love this movie and I’m so proud to be part of it. Everett Blunck (playing Griffin) is so naturally talented, just brilliant, and truly, I loved everyone involved. In theaters (!!) August 29th!

Everett Blunck and Abby Ryder Fortson also star in the coming-of-age feature from writer-director Nicholas Colia that hits theaters this year from Vertical.

Please see Hard Truths even though it was SOMEHOW nominated for nothing today. It’s so incredibly good, and so funny, until you realise you stopped laughing and started crying but can’t quite pinpoint when. The entire cast is wonderful (put Michele Austin in everything, please. & Tuwaine Barrett?!)
But what Marianne Jean-Baptiste does in this film is breathtaking. Mike Leigh movies are always home to performances where you feel like you’re watching a human being instead of seeing acting, and Poppy is so real. She’s unlike anyone you’ve ever seen on film but she is someone you’ve definitely met
MJB reveals layer after layer of anger, hurt, and cruel wit. It shouldn’t be this rare to see a female character so completely unconcerned with being “likable”, but we all know how rare it is. Here is this wholly human person who is allowed to rage and pick and complain. It feels like a revolution
For me it’s the performance of the year, yes, but it’s also a performance that I will never forget, that reminded me why I even do what I do, that makes me want to try to be better, that makes me feel like art still matters even when the world seems to be falling apart. Please see it.

Such sad news about David Lynch. The greatest of the greats. At the age of 14 I rented his films from our local video store over and over again. I still remember that buzzy, electric feeling of being inspired to the depths of my soul and feeling like anything was possible if these films existed.
Through watching his work I realised that there is no point creating anything if you’re not willing to be brave, and weird, and explore every part of your own humanity-even the parts that are terrifying and mysterious to you, the parts that you’re scared will overwhelm you if you look too closely.
I was cast in Heavenly Creatures at 15 and I really think that the fact I had watched David Lynch (and Mike Leigh) movies over and over had prepared me for that work. Because I knew what it looked like when an actor fully committed and was supported by a filmmaker who was willing to go there also.

Of course he could not have known the depths of gratitude that that “thank you” was meant to convey. Thank you, David Lynch. What a legacy he leaves behind. All my love to his family and creative collaborators and those who loved him.
