- Light and shade: the sacristy door at the Queen of Holderness, St. Patrick, Patrington, Yorkshire. I waited for the shadows to align. The silhouette of curvilinear tracery from the stained glass casts a presence of absence, echoing forms both here and not here. #throwbackthursday
- Not for everybody, but If you ❤️ history, architecture and heritage like here at Patrington, you might like my Genius Loci Digest - an architectural photographer’s camper-van-camino through the British Isles - posted weekly. Subscribe for free here: digest.andymarshall....
- Layers of history - Sketched a medley of medieval and post-medieval items from the amazing church at All Saints' church at Ilkley - the site dates back to Roman times and probably beyond. #amsketching #myart #sketchbook #urbansketching
- 📍Loci: Ashwell - Medieval Graffiti Capital www.digest.andymarsh...
- In Anglo-Saxon architecture, Roman stone meets a timber way of thinking: stone becomes articulated into the Saxon timber-centric world view. I suppose, in this way, it is also a memory as well as a material. Here at All Saints', Earls Barton. 📸 my own.
- Such a rare survival - the nave ceiling at Peterborough Cathedral dates from the C13th - it has been overpainted twice but the original design remains - and original paint from the C13th has been found beneath the nail heads...

- ✨Latest Digest - Heaven is an S-curve: “ Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. It appears not only in art and architecture, but in melody, in brushstroke, in the arc of a soliloquy, the rhythm of a poem, the shape of this narrative.” 👉 www.digest.andymarsh...
- Over in Ilkley sketching the font at the mo. Lovely decoration.
- Like to get a rough sketch in with my pencil first. I use a Pentel Graphicgear 1000 with a 3mm HB lead.
- Added a few more elements from the church at Ilkley
- Just putting in the base colours. Then I’ll start to build up the tone.
- 📍Loci: Bosham - birthplace of Harold Godwinson www.digest.andymarsh...

- Flooded fields at Upton upon Severn reveal ridge and furrow in the floodplain. Medieval open-field agriculture still shaping the land beneath modern pasture. Raking light has a way of making deeper histories visible.
- The sea of steps at Wells Cathedral sketched during a visit last week. There’s nothing so evocative as the past impinging, so visually, upon the present. #amsketching #myart

- Layers of history. The C14th crypt of Holy Trinity, Bosham (birth town of Harold Godwinson) has rib vaults made of Caen stone. Now a chapel it may have originally been a charnel house.

- Not a tiny fragment, nor a single sherd of pottery, but a full, voluminous Anglo-Saxon space from the 9th century at St Wystan’s in Repton, Derbyshire. The spiral columns - perhaps a memory of St Peter’s shrine. Holy air encased in stone. Betjeman’s words describe it perfectly.
