- Pipe burstin’ on Downer
- I always like “fix your hearts” because it (correctly) puts the onus on the individual, and it (correctly) suggests being a good person is both an action and an ongoing process. Anyway, I’m trying.
- Following a nearly hourlong discussion, the Licenses Committee approves a tavern & food license for Diaspora Sports Bar, a.k.a. the thing going into the old Company Brewing that everyone got mad about. Slightly shorter hours, active police officer no longer part of ownership group. Article soon.
- Article here:
- Just remembered a 16mm student film I did about my father and the last shot was him looking into the camera but then while film was running I gave him the camera and he filmed me and I was really proud of that idea and my professor was like "Your dad framed you better than you framed him."
- Not to harp too much on this, but yeah. Seeing lots of deleted posts from folks who had "solid" sources yesterday.
- The "ICE just booked 100 hotel rooms in Milwaukee!" thing is going around again. Remember:
- R.I.P.
- Tune in to What's Brewing Wisconsin today at 3 to see the wonderful Miss Wisconsin talk about her role as a state ambassador of education and goodwill, as well as her experience being the very first Black woman to wear the Miss Wisconsin crown. I'm on after that, talking about board games.
- Just remembered walking home last night and there was a car in the middle of the road and the door was open and the driver was like "Hey Matt! How's it going, man?" and it was Mark Borchardt waiting for an Amazon truck to move so he could park outside Pizza Man.
- Were we ever so young
- 2016 was a big year for me because it was the year I proudly served as spokesperson for Cousins Subs.
- Dr. Good Score (For Me)
- ANOTHER HOT FRIDAY NIGHT
- Fish fry and Jeopardy at a bar = GOOD
- (Bar is Henry’s on Belleview)
- Both gone a whole year.
- Don't you hate when you look up a recipe or simple instructions and they're buried beneath a needlessly long personal story? Welcome to our "How-To Wisconsin" column, where we bury a recipe or simple instructions beneath a needlessly long personal story.
- What year is this
- All day breakfast
- Nine days late, but once again my New Year's resolution is to go full goth.
- Great new look. No notes.
- My 2017 review of a Corey Feldman show makes a somewhat prominent appearance in a new Corey Feldman documentary, Corey Feldman vs The World. And yes, Corey Feldman suggests I'm "working for the dark side."
- Another great N/A Day! Just one of the 8,000 original events we'll do this year! (And by "we," I mean "Tyler.") Find a handy list of our upcoming events below...
- More:
- I’ve had three “How did they DO this?” video game moments in my life: my first time playing Super Mario Bros. for NES, my first time playing Breath Of The Wild for Switch, and now my first time playing Donkey Kong Bananza for Switch 2.
- I enjoyed MARTY SUPREME. Went into it thinking it would be a “heartwarming sports movie” pivot from one of the guys who did GOOD TIME and UNCUT GEMS. Turns out it was EXACTLY the kind of movie one would expect from one of the guys who did GOOD TIME and UNCUT GEMS.
- Peak Milwaukee
- I can't make WMSE's Friday Night Freak Show screening of GREMLINS tonight, but here's a photo of me and Gizmo. He squeaked!
- I'll be on TMJ4's What's Brewing Wisconsin today at 3 p.m. talking about Christmas snacks, sloppy joes, and everyone's favorite holiday treat...
- Love when the kids are like "Boy are you stupid, Charlie Brown!" and all Charlie Brown can say is
- Just snuck up on a friend wrapping gifts in a busy bookstore and said "Excuse me, can I get a vodka tonic?" and everyone laughed and I instantly realized I have 100% become my father.
- Drinking drinks and eating food and listening to a barbershop quartet sing Christmas songs in the Streets of Old Milwaukee last night was magical. One more year.
- I chatted with the new owner of American Science & Surplus about A. the store still being open, B. things the store would like to bring back in 2026, and C. the need for folks to shop at the store.
- “So what did they do with that $200,000 GoFundMe?”
- Solid "Legal issues" wiki section for '80s / '90s alt-rock band Too Much Joy
- Bleak times
- Jeopardy going hard
- Never mind
- "Best" part of doing local end-of-year lists: totally forgetting a really, really good record. This year, it's Sex Scenes and their terrific EVERYTHING MAKES ME SICK. I was CONVINCED it came out in 2024, but nope, it was May 2025. A big miss for me, but a GREAT record.
- This is our 12th (!) year-end roundup, and I think it's our strongest yet. It felt like we got back to being "ourselves" in 2025; interestingly, that was largely due to the fantastic work of folks not named Matt or Tyler. Look for even more folks in 2026!
- Meanwhile, Tyler's tireless work on our inaugural Morgan Park Picnic points toward Milwaukee Record's other strength: our live events. We put on a TON of events, from halftime shows at Cactus and film screenings at the Avalon to Cooperage-filling n/a showcases and city-spoofing comedy roasts.
- None of this would be possible without the support of our many advertisers and sponsors—some of whom have been with us since day one. We're a proudly free (and pop-up-free) site, and we intend to stay that way. Click those ads! Support local businesses!
- And thank YOU for reading. Capturing eyeballs has gotten harder in recent years, especially for a site that doesn't run political rage bait. Hopefully Milwaukee Record keeps you informed about cool stuff, gives you a chuckle now and then, and serves as an oasis in an increasingly lousy internet.
- Our favorite MKE music videos of the year! Fun!
- Our favorite MKE music of the year! Tons of great stuff!
- Couldn’t be happier with my neighborhood. Tons of stuff crammed into two blocks. Support that stuff!
