- Reposted by Eva-Lotte Schwarzinteresting yet unsurprising stuff happening in catalonia: the recently founded right-wing extremist, separatist (!?) party aliança jumps in electoral predictions from 2 to 20 (!) MPs in the Catalan regional parliament, as Vox (right-wing extremist, anti-separatist) grows slightly up to 13 MPs

- It’s embarrassing that Friedrich Merz based his opening speech at #COP30 on the topic of "Technologieoffenheit" (openness to technology). This is exactly the rhetoric that has masked the unwillingness to invest in sustainable energy / mobility for years.

- The suspension of family reunification for those with subsidiary protection marks a new low in German migration policy. Many children will age out of eligibility while waiting. Populism is trumping human rights.

- In 2017, Germany’s Constitutional Court ruled the NPD too small to pose a threat, thus not banning it. In 2025, the AfD is deemed too large to ban, as it would disenfranchise a significant voter base. So, what’s the electoral sweet spot for a party to be just right for prohibition? #afdverbot

- 2024 was the hottest year on record. Disasters like the Valencia floods are clearly linked to the climate crisis - yet many media still avoid calling it that. Maybe it’s because we cling to the idea of “weather” as neutral, harmless small talk. climate.copernicus.eu/global-clima...
- The climate politics in Germany’s new coalition deal stem from 3 parties that don’t really want climate action—but can’t admit it in a pro-climate public discourse. The result are 1000 hurdles and diluted measures to mask their unwillingness.

- In their new coalition agreement, CDU/CSU and SPD commit to reaching Germany’s climate goals by... ....doing no more than absolutely necessary. #koalitionsvertrag
- This is combined with readjusting the CO₂ reduction targets by including negative emissions from projects outside (!!) Germany. If you can't reach the bar, bring the bar down to you.
- Also worth highlighting is the construction of 20 GW of new gas power plants — incidentally, the only energy sector given a concrete expansion target.

- 🧵 (1/7) What a great think piece on the conservative obsession with suffering and conflict — especially in light of the “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” logic behind the new tariffs.
- (2/7) Conservatism (especially alt-right ideology) thrives on dualism: us vs. them, glorious tradition vs. rotten modernity. It’s a worldview that _needs_ conflict to sustain itself.
- 3/7 That’s why post–Cold War works like Clash of Civilizations were so popular. Conservatives were desperate to find a new enemy: migrants, Muslims, China — someone to fight.
-
View full thread7/7 Behind all this is a deep, almost mythic belief: that greatness is born from suffering. But in practice, it just becomes policy failure dressed up as virtue.
