- Reposted by Ghost Coast.A fascinating longform investigation which reveals that the Trump administration in large part decided to sanction Albanese, the the U.N. special rapporteur for Palestine, because American businesses were alarmed by the prospect of being named "human rights abusers' due to their ties to settlements.
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.I wrote about the Epstein files (gift link) www.theverge.com/tech/874721/...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.“Space travel is the setting, but that isn’t the heart of the franchise’s story, which is about humanity bettering itself through cooperating with each other, reckoning with hard philosophical questions and imagining a socialist-inspired socioeconomic system“ 🖖🏽 www.newscientist.com/article/mg26...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.“In the StarTrek scenario, the men telling us of their militarised, corporate plans are the baddies” 🥲🖖🏽 www.newscientist.com/article/mg26...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast. My latest @newscientist.com column for subscribers and library patrons is about Elon Musk’s attempts to co-opt Star Trek and how Mars is actually a hostile planet 🧪🔭 www.newscientist.com/article/mg26...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast. If you want to understand the mainstreaming of far right politics and why defeating the far right at the ballot box doesn't mean actually defeating far-right politics, this is it
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.A publisher who lays off a reporter whose pen is freezing because she's covering a frigid war zone while dodging missiles is not an editor you want to work for, in a more perfect world
- Reposted by Ghost Coast. Not lost on me that award-winning journalists in Wapo’s Middle East bureaus have been laid off as the U.S. builds up military presence in the area
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.Labour's changes to immigration rules, including potentially applying them retroactively, would be some of the most draconian anti-immigration policies in decades. They're the hostile environment on speed. This is pure cruelty as policy, with absolutely no merit to them archive.today/2026.02.03-2...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast. You can find all of the pieces in our "A Day for Gaza" package here. We're doing this to reaffirm our commitment to cover Gaza and to let its people tell their own stories. And we urge our media colleagues to make the same commitment. This story is not over. www.thenation.com/article/worl...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.Media coverage of Gaza has plummeted. So today on @thenation.com, we're doing something pretty special: we're only running pieces by people in and from Gaza. We're calling it "A Day for Gaza." You can find links to all of the incredible pieces here. Please read! www.thenation.com/article/worl...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.I stopped reading at "We don't stop deportations" Then you're cops. What the fuck???
- Oh boy.
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.I bring this up every now and again but Ted Kaczynski’s Industrial Society and Its Future is seething with resentment towards leftists, minorities and women than he is interested in critiquing tech and modern society, and he drops the pretence at the latter by the sixth paragraph
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.should be obvious but how we collectively react to the historical child abuse revelations coming out now will influence what people currently abusing children today will feel they can get away with. it will influence whether or not current/ new victims can feel safe enough to come forwards.
- Listening to the carbomb episode of @bloodwork.show again, and the description of PK’s ISI’s perfect.
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.I dealt w the Gaza Ministry of Health (often dismissively called Hamas MOH in press) many times & they were literally the same as pub health ppl everywhere on earth: professional, calm, compassionate & methodically accurate. In the US, S Africa, Uganda, Greece, Gaza, pub health folx are the same!
- I cannot tell you how much doubt was consistently directed at the Gaza Health Ministry’s casualty numbers and how much pressure was put on news organizations to couch those numbers as unreliable. Biden himself said they were fabricated! www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.New court record from the FBI details the state of the devices seized from Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson: phone was on w/Lockdown Mode; personal laptop was off; work laptop was on w/Touch ID; several Signal chats used disappearing messages. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.Canadians horrified by what ICE is doing should realize the RCMP uses the same tactics domestically against Indigenous people and yet barely anyone speaks up. Journalists have been arrested just for trying to cover it
- Reposted by Ghost Coast. This is infuriating. We've known that these datasets are rife with CSAM since at least 2023, and those are the ones that are public. stacks.stanford.edu/file/druid:k...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.Last year, I went to Cambodia to explore Nike's claim that it pays factory workers 1.9X the minimum wage on average. It wasn't true there. My reporting partner, @matthewkish.bsky.social, went to Indonesia and asked ~100 workers whether they earn 1.9X. None did. Said one union official: "Bullshit."
- People who follow me here know I tend to post about Pakistan once in a while (even started a newsletter about digital rights in there and S. Asia). So of course I *had* to share this: pk.usembassy.gov/u-s-charge-d...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.hey @rentouljohn.bsky.social, i found an example for you. in this piece civil language is used to argue in favour of democide — even going so far as to accuse the prime minister himself of cowardice for not implementing policies that would lead to the mass death of thousands of british civilians
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.More here: www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do...
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.Striking numbers which demonstrate, in spades, how tiny is the popular support for the culture of hate that Britain's institutions seem determined to impose on a kind and accepting majority. (Expect the BBC to ignore it or qualify it to oblivion.)
- Reposted by Ghost Coast. Not just any journalist, she won the goddamn Triple Crown of broadcast journalism (an Emmy, a Peabody, and a Murrow) in 2024 for her reporting on Gaza. This is textbook censorship of the highest degree
- Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda with 1.4m followers reports TikTok ban aje.news/ljjuww
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.Gregk went back on @trashfuture.bsky.social (the free one) to discuss recent events in Minneapolis, the Trump Admin's incoherent memetic warfare, Labour candidate for Gorton and Denton Reza Pahlavi, and Brazilian Lightning Rod Wile E. Coyote aka Jair Bolsonaro. Listen to @trashfuture.bsky.social
- Reposted by Ghost Coast. The government’s suggestion that rolling out 20 minute courses on writing “AI“ prompts, sponsored by Google, Microsoft and Amazon, is somehow comparable to the founding of the Open University (the Wilson government‘s, & Jennie Lee’s, proudest achievement), is an insult to our human intelligence.
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.A friend of mine recently admitted to me they had a serious fear of grammar, I tried to console them, but they ran out of the room screaming! I don't know what happened, all I did was pat them on the shoulder and say "there, their, they're"
- Reposted by Ghost Coast.Calling transphobia a 'gateway drug' to the far right undersells it. It's pure accelerant. Grimly fascinating to guess what crankery becomes any famous transphobe's secondary obsession, cos they all have one: 15 minute cities are fascism! Grok noncing is cool! ICE are good! We should kill all dogs!
- Reposted by Ghost Coast. This is from the NYT masthead editorial about the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. The highlighted line invalidates not just the editorial, but the very idea of newspaper editorials crafted by the consensus of a board. Better to publish nothing at all than to publish a line like this.
