Climate scientist and writer. Theoretical astrophysicist by training. Avowed Earth supremacist. Yes, that's my real name. You should read my book, it's good shorturl.at/aJRYb
- you would not believe the number of people who tell me (a scientist who studies climate feedback loops) that we should despair about climate change because of climate feedback loops
- trying to talk about science to non scientists is wild because you'll be like "warm air holds more water vapor" and then a bunch of other scientists will be like EXCUSE ME DO YOU MEAN 1/es des/dT = lv/RvT^2
- i'm just saying that "greenhouse gases don't give a shit about the sunlight coming in but go hogwild for the planetary heat going out" is mostly fine and if you explain Wien's law to me I will block you
- One of the most surprising things I've learned from my research is that "how hot it's gotten so far" doesn't tell us much about "how hot it's going to get eventually". Long-ago, really weird climates can tell us a lot more about where we're headed.
- why? We get visible light from the sun and radiate infrared light into space. Our temperature is determined by the balance between energy in and energy out. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere don't care about the sunlight coming in, but they trap the energy coming out and throw some of it back down
- what happens when we increase greenhouse gases? They trap more energy going out. This upsets the in/out balance. The Earth heats up.

- I’ve heard “the jet stream is getting weird so we’re seeing more cold snaps”. Most scientist don’t buy this (see below) but there IS evidence that warming Arctic -> more sluggish weather systems -> longer heat waves in summer
- As a NASA scientist with a phd in astrophysics my assessment is that compared to Earth, this planet sucks
- New planet just dropped and it 1) is almost exactly Earth-sized 2) has a year that's almost exactly 1 Earth year. 3) orbits a star that is not a 💢temperamental little shit M-dwarf 💢but is instead a 🧡 good orange boi 🧡 Me for @science.org based on results presented at #RockyWorlds4: 🔭🧪
- this is not the official NASA position but it should be
