- Always think about how much Munich affected my dad and so many kids his age who absolutely adored that team. It broke him. Carried it with him for years.
- There’s obviously so many sad stories about Munich but one that’s always stayed with me is the one about Dragoslav Šekularac, who played against United for Red Star the day before the crash and had gone for drinks with some of the players in Belgrade afterwards.
- After Red Star had pulled it back to 3-3, Šekularac was annoyed with himself for missing a late chance from close range which would’ve levelled it on aggregate and forced a play-off, thus meaning United wouldn’t have been in Munich when they were.
- Can’t imagine how many times he must have replayed that miss after he heard the news the next day. I think I first read about it in Jonathan Wilson’s book on United’s history and remember him speaking of his admiration for the Babes and his affection for the club. Powerful stuff.
- Got this in my email. Absolutely tragic.
- Pep Guardiola choosing now to speak out on Sudan, as scrutiny grows over the UAE’s role in fuelling the conflict, is interesting timing. Hard to believe it’ll play well with his employers. Almost as if he knows he’s off soon.
- Referee absolutely bottling sending Rodri off here. Casemiro would’ve had a prison sentence
- Enjoyed Neville likening it to Soccer Aid. It is. Even before City’s first, the crowd were so flat
- Utterly embarrassing from Spurs this. Everything about it.
- Some of the old familiar frailty in surrendering a two-goal lead, but again United finding a way to lift themselves when it looked like points had been dropped. Moments like that matter. Sesko’s winner doesn’t just settle a match, it nudges a team’s psychology in the right direction
- Maguire gets a touch on the ball for the penalty, as Cuenca did in the first half on Mbeumo. Assuming that’s what he was saying to the ref. Doesn’t matter now but it’s rare you see them given if the player got the shot away.
- Not even sure United winning is any less stressful than then losing
