- I slept like crap and had multiple anxiety dreams last night, so this week’s #Scriptsky #Screenwriting thread will be a short one. Let’s talk about the DOs and DON’Ts of NAMING YOUR CHARACTERS. Something I absolutely hate and routinely overthink. But I learned a few tips and tricks… 🧵1
- I LOVED Wolf Hall! But holy shit was it was confusing that there are like 36 characters named Thomas in it! Unless you’re writing historical fiction, make it easy on your audience to remember who’s who. Vary up what letter the name starts with, how many syllables, suffixes, and no rhyming names. 🧵2
- The tone of your script will impact what your characters’ names. Big City Greens is silly, so we have minor characters with names like Maria Media (journalist), Mayor Hansock, Gwendolyn Zapp (tech CEO), Dr Enamel (dentist). That works for our show but would feel ridiculous in a gritty procedural. 🧵3

View full threadOkay, here are my top 2 tips for naming your characters: 1. Don’t overthink it! If you’re spending days on character names, you’re wasting your time. 2. Shorter names help keep page counts down! Seriously. This should be a consideration. I love 3 and 4 letter names for this reason. Saves space! 5/5
