- Wish I could be there. I find myself returning to Amílcar Cabral's writings on/ the PAIGC's approaches to education again and again recently. Sonia Vaz Borges has produced such valuable work on this.
- Among other things, was reminded today that the year* following the 2010 earthquake Canada began hosting joint training exercises with US + British military simulating the invasion of Haiti. Port-au-Prince was still choked with rubble, promised aid undelivered, and they drilled occupation scenarios.

- I admire Nick Hune-Brown's tenacity as an editor. This is a despairing, compassionate, and very worthy read.
- A suspicious pitch from a freelancer led editor @nickhunebrown.bsky.social to investigate their past work. In the end, four publications, including The Guardian and Dwell, removed articles from their sites. thelocal.to/investigatin...

- Hotel Oloffson is gone. The iconic Port-au-Prince gingerbread was set alight and burned to ash last night. #Haiti
- The Oloffson wasn't just a Graham Greene backdrop. It was an incredible art space, a queer space, a space of worship, a space of refuge, a space of gossip, a space of protest, a rare space where multiple worlds intersected and sweat and danced and drank rum together. It was purposefully destroyed.
- There are others that show the lush grounds, gazebo, and main building better, but this is my absolute favourite RAM video shot at the Oloffson. What a loss. youtu.be/qCVkrItT5ws?...

View full threadLet me be more precise with my language because "gang" and "militia" are too muddy. I've seen some Haitian press call Viv Ansanm a "criminal coalition." Others, "bandes criminelles." The armed neighbourhood groups (supported by residents, donations) are commonly called auto-defense brigades.
- The US wasn’t “prompted” to invade Haiti and install a brutal military occupation so much as it actively planned for it, helping create conditions to make invasion seem necessary. The Farnham Plan (named for a VP of now-Citibank) to occupy Haiti was already in place when President Sam was lynched.
