- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)I don't think people have, as yet, fully grasped the likely societal impact of the fact that generations of women, LGBTQ+ folk and others have suffered, and have simmered with anger, and now, thanks to the Epstein files, we don't just have the abstract concept of patriarchy to blame - we have names.
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)Doctors, nurses, and other officers are increasingly being deployed to ICE detention centers. Some have resigned in protest, while others offer a rare look into bleak conditions.
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)Back in 2020 it wasn't a good career move in the climate space to shit talk Bill Gates' and point out his climate hypocrisy. I was the only person quoted in an article on that issue in a VICE piece. And that was before we knew of the Epstein connections. However, I was right.

- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)Something I can't stand is watching a YT video, being invested, devoting my attention to the speaker, and then they segue into a fuckin sponsorship ad mid-paragraph. I haaate it, feels like I'm being tricked more than usual. Is it part of your contract that you can't say "and now for an ad break"?
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)If I ever do a sponsorship thing (doubt it, I'm always ignoring them in my inbox because I hate em so much) I swear to god I won't make it sound like a personal anecdote that warps into a fuckin VPN ad. Nebula too, stop this casual parasocial ad read trickery and introduce it like it's an AD

- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)I don't want to see a racist image posted by a president we already know is racist. I don't care if it's a new low, there will always be new lows. I want to see and hear about ordinary people's resistance to ICE. I want to see and hear new ways we can gum up the works or destroy the machine.
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)There's no reason to accept this as normal, though. Much of Starmer and Labour's unpopularity is not misfortune but his own doing. Mandelson was a choice. Consistently pursuing policy positions designed to appeal to people who will not vote for you - and alienating core supporters - is a choice.
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)You remember when politicians were known for shaking hands and kissing babies? Every so often, I'm struck by moments like this when it hits me how hard we've drifted from our expectations of them being people we could like.
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)Absolutely this. Somehow business owners think it's a right, not a privilege to have a business and i once lit up an owner when he said "I can't afford to pay my staff well", i just said, "then you can't afford a business. Close up shop." He genuinely looked like I told him to drown his first born.
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)"But I can't afford to hire a human artist for my business!" Then you can't afford a business.

- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)(1/2) Game designers working on Metroidvanias: Consider using positive reinforcement instead of negative. I'll share an idea as an example. You decide you want to encourage players to explore different directions rather than do runbacks after death. Instead of penalizing them for death
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)(2/2) such as by making them go retrieve their "soul" or currency drops, track the last X rooms they entered before death and give them *increased* loot/stats/health while in rooms they didn't pass through last run, but make this bonus decrease each time they enter any room they "drained" last life.
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)My point here is: You don't have to punish players away from activities and failure just because you think of everything in terms of "git gud" mentality. You can reward them for being open to new experiences in your game, and for not taking failure personally.

- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)I got my personal best review in the cycle before I was laid off in Nov. Spearheaded a project that got approving eyes from leadership. Told I "set the standard". Repeated expressions of worried incredulity from unaffected co-workers absolutely convinced me my layoff was being used to scare people.

Managers hate the factory union “work to rule” mentality, but the reality is every new unpaid task makes them more money and leaves your body more broken.
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)something I remember from the big tech layoffs of a couple years ago is seeing coworkers with excellent performance reviews - even some who had literally just been promoted - getting thrown overboard for completely opaque reasons and realizing that was part of the point
- At the same time, the extent of the Washington Post layoffs highlight how it didn't matter how hardworking, loyal, smart, collaborative, award-winning, competitive, knowledgeable and devoted so many of the staff were. It wasn't enough to prevent being laid off by one of the richest men in the world.
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)the idea that there’s something you can do - some level of performance you can achieve - that makes you safe from the whims of execs is something they want to avoid they want you to fear for your job, they want you to feel unsafe and unable to speak out that, above all else, is the message
- Reposted by InordinateFondness (18+)I forget who first coined it but “the revolt of the bosses” sums it up perfectly the power that labor held in the remote work era was existentially terrifying to them and every move they have made since has been designed to crush it and instill fear across the workforce
