- This is slightly misleading. The wildcat subspecies that became domesticated cats, Felis lybica lybica, is native in Egypt and the near east. That makes it fairly difficult to show that a specific cat found there was definitely associating with humans.
- But Felis lybica lybica arriving in Poland 8000 years ago suggests a commensal or domestic relationship with humans. But if you find the remains of a cat in Egypt at the same time, which you do, you need really unambiguous evidence to argue its presence there was explicitly associated with humans.
- It's sort of like if a biologist in 10,000 years found evidence of kangaroos living now in the US. It's much much easier to argue that those US kangaroos are domesticated than when you find the remains of a kangaroo from now in Australia, even if that kangaroo is also domesticated.
- In fact even if they find evidence of a wild population of feral kangaroos in the US that still very strongly suggests kangaroos were domesticated because that's in fact the only reason kangaroos live in North America.
- The Democratic leadership in Congress needs to be replaced. At this point they're giving Trump at least as much cover as resistance.
- Like on what planet are body cams supposed to change DHS behavior? The agents who committed one of the murders in Minneapolis filmed it on their body cameras and the ICE agent who committed the other murder filmed it on his phone.
- And they already had promised to all have body cameras last September and just decided they weren't going to do it.

- I guess to be fair I really wish I had more friends here generally. I'm a bit of a hermit and that's not my natural preference.
- Like anyone who's into working with textiles I have a pretty sizable stash of material. What's I guess slightly less normal about me is a lot of it is rope, though I have a fair amount of yarn that's suitable for macrame/knotting too, and some stuff that you could pass off as either yarn or cord.
- I wish I had some friends here who did knotting, it would be fun to see what they could come up with to do with some of it. I have a bunch of 1000 foot spools of quite nice 750lb nylon paracord I got super cheap a while back in some nice bright colors. It's wonderful for mats and leashes and stuff.
- And the fun thing about paracord is if you need it thinner you can just remove some of the cores and the outside stretches out a bit and that really effectively slims it down. So you can use it as anything from just the braided outer casing to like a 4mm pretty hardcore rope.
- Reposted by LacciI need a break from the relentless (bad!) news, so I'm poking through some recent photos, and I figured hey, maybe you want a momentary break as well. So here are four of those photos. All by me.

- It might be worth mentioning that cold temperatures substantially reduce the impact of most tear gasses. In fact the first time the Germans used a poisonous gas in combat on a large scale in WWI it was tear gas in winter on the Eastern front and the Russians barely noticed it.
- The Russians didn't even tell the other Entente members it had happened. The next time the Germans used poison gas they went with chlorine gas and used it in the West (near Ypres in Belgium) and their opponents were totally unprepared.
- For that matter even the Germans were pretty shocked at what happened. It was the only time in the war poison gas broke open enemy lines and they were unprepared to take advantage of it. Btw they had signed a treaty that they would never use poison gas or tear gas in war.

- Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire is not a useful thing to read if you're interested in the history of the Roman or Byzantine Empires. It might be an interesting thing to read for literary reasons or if you're interested in the enlightenment or enlightenment philosophy.
- Gibbon didn't have access to the vast majority of the information he would have needed to say anything really useful about the Roman Empire. And Gibbon's analysis of the causes and factors that led to the fall of the Roman empire really wasn't in line with even the limited information he had.
- Gibbon's analysis was highly motivated by promoting enlightenment values, and making people (possibly including himself) think historical analysis strongly backed them over traditional values in Europe at the time. The pose style was also groundbreaking and very influential from what I understand.
