Bullies Suck
Poster of REAL (often ugly) American history. Not the feel-good bullshit they taught you in school.
Example: Hey Florida, the transatlantic slave trade was not, in fact, a vocational training program for immigrant Africans.
- #OTD in #History 1813 February 05: Mima #QueenVHepburn was Decided Context: Lord Mansfield's historic ruling in Somerset's Case (1772) implied to some lawyers and judges in America that enslaved people who entered England could become free. #WhiteSupremacy ugly #AmericanHistory 1/4
- In their petition, the Queens relied on hearsay evidence that an ancestor, Mary Queen, had been free by virtue of having been in England before arriving in America, where she was later sold for a term of 7 years (perhaps as an indentured servant). #QueenVHepburn ugly #AmericanHistory 2/4
- The hearsay evidence was meant to show that, the Queens were actually descended from a free woman. Facts: "The Supreme Court found that hearsay evidence was insufficient.” SOURCE: ISCOTUS Now, for the Chicago-Kent College of Law. #QueenVHepburn ugly #AmericanHistory #WhiteSupremacy bullshit 3/4
- “The Court’s decision denied Black people the right to provide hearsay evidence supporting their freedom claims, prioritizing the propertied interests of enslavers over the lives of people those enslavers claimed belonged to them.” SOURCE: The #1619Project #QueenVHepburn ugly #AmericanHistory 4/4
- #OTD in #History 1899 February 04: The Philippine Republic Declared War on the United States Context: War was declared after a white American soldier shot and killed two Filipino soldiers. #PhilippineAmericanWar #AmericanImperialism #WhiteSupremacy #AmericanHistory 1/4
- Facts: One Black American ‘soldier wrote anonymously to a WI newspaper, ‘all of this never would have occurred if the army of occupation would have treated [the Filipinos] as people.’” In late 1899, fleeing president Emiliano Aguinaldo, realized Filipinos couldn't win direct confrontation. 2/4
- Aguinaldo ordered his troops to throw away their uniforms & melt into the countryside to mount a guerrilla insurgency. The short war left approximately 3,000 Filipinos and only 59 American dead. #PhilippineAmericanWar #AmericanImperialism #WhiteSupremacy #AmericanHistory 3/4
- The primary SOURCE for this post was the book, Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America's Empire by Jonathan M. Katz #PhilippineAmericanWar #AmericanImperialism #WhiteSupremacy #AmericanHistory 4/4
- Slavery wouldn't be outlawed (ostensibly) in the United States until 1865, after a bloody Civil War. #AmericanHistory 2/2
- Sec 2 of the 15th Amendment says, "The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation." Which means they can pass #VotingRights Laws to protect people's right to vote & by extension our democracy. They just need to have the will to do it. #AmericanHistory #Progress 2/2
