- So begins the Shigeru Mizuki Thread! I read through all of Showa before the end of the year but didn’t have time to write up my thoughts… and have been dragging my heels on reading Hitler for obvious reasons lol… 🧵
- If offer heard Showa described as ‘a manga about WW2 from a Japanese perspective’ which, while accurate for parts of the series, also sell it short: it’s better to think of as a memoir both of the Showa period and a biography of Mizuki’s life during it.
- The book opens with a young Mizuki & right from the off it sets the tone: this is going to be a warts and all story of the Mangaka’s life and his feelings on war. It also touches on his relationship with Nonnonba, his grandmother who would start his lifelong fascination with Yokai… See below!
