- Look, we've all been overlooked for positions at the University of Nottingham, but you don't see me becoming an ethno-nationalist in response.

- Yeah the Bears clearly have the big man on speed dial.
- Turns out the response was “New phone, who dis?”
- Locked out of my work's Google services as I didn't respond to the email sent at 11.40 pm on New Years Eve to enroll in something before New Years Day. Love it. 🙃

- I wouldn't normally link to an AI paper but the DeepSeek paper in Nature has one astonishing stat in the supplementary. The cost to train on top of the base LLM was below $300k. I think the cost of the original model was only 10x more. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
- Why do I point this out? Well in the US, the dogma of hyperscaling to make the next big leap in model performance means capital expenditure on AI was larger than all consumer spending this year. finance.yahoo.com/news/spendin...
- At some point either cause VC funders or other realise this is a complete waste of money or AI growth falters in another way, its going to make the dot-com crash look like a picnic in comparison?
- You can tell SPM is uncomfortable about turning 30, it’s spent all year telling everyone it’s 25!
- A birthday is a good time to reflect! To mark SPM @ 30, this month's issue of Cerebral Cortex features deeply insightful commentaries on neuroimaging analysis from Ed Bullmore, Peter Bandettini, Peter Fox, Pedro Valdes-Sosa, Klaas Enno Stephan, Viktor Jirsa, et al [1/2] academic.oup.com/cercor/issue

- What a first six seconds for the Eagles, an injury and a sending off!
- Its a complex feeling to receive two papers in the same week for comments, both including authors who sadly passed away too soon in 2025. Hopefully these papers in small part help their names echo though the ages that little longer.
- I've got 99 problems and they are all related to how FreeSurfer stores mesh data.
- Turns out instead of just voxel and world coordinates, there's a secret third way too?
- One thing I wasn't expecting to have regularly to look up is what the Americans call paracetamol.
- Pleased to see this paper finally published. We investigated which conductive models are appropriate for source analysis of spine electrophysiology. Turns out modelling the bone is quite important! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

- Well that's it. Today was my last day at @ucl.ac.uk and my last day in academia. I just want to thank everyone from @uclnpp.bsky.social and @imagingneuroucl.bsky.social for making feel at home for the past (almost) 6 years. Its been the gift which kept on giving.
- I'm not leaving the MEG world just yet, I'm thrilled to announce I'm joining the team at Fieldline Medical next month. Been hard keeping that one on a need to know basis!

- An important commentary on the state of M/EEG software and the perverse fact we all rely on something which there is little reward in writing and maintaining. This needs to change. That, or we never allow these authors to ever get on a plane together.
- Ever used open-source (neuroscience MEG/EEG) software? Please take a moment to check out this report from within. This paper is very close to my heart, because we are moving towards a crisis … 🧵 bsky.app/profile/imag...
