your government mandated CanCon. I like cities, stories, and flat-faced dogs. Sometimes I talk academic integrity. Sometimes I help with @terrorcamp.bsky.social. T'karonto. (she/they)
- O'Hara as Cookie Fleck, limping wildly into the arena at the climax of Best in Show. Incredible, subtle physical comedy. Every second she is on screen is a dream. Unparalleled.
- I need to get really weird about a niche media property very soon so I stop caring about finding meaning in my career.
- I bought an e-version of my class textbook so I can read it on my phone It has AI-generated questions to "test your knowledge". I gave them a shot - genuinely. I want to retain what I'm reading. But they're straightforwardly wrong about half the time.
- Reposted by memento mori (hot girl edition)Now that the White House is using AI to edit photos of their political opponents to create fascist propaganda I’m wondering if anyone could have seen this use of AI coming. Okay I’m hearing lots of people did and they were forced to watch corporations smother the masses with the technology anyways
- ??? WHAT ???
- This movie was Not Good. And I'm not just saying that because I don't enjoy anything (save season one of AMC's The Terror (2018)). One might even say, it was Bad!
- Reposted by memento mori (hot girl edition)NEWS! My next book, TRANSLUNAR, about a closeted trans woman who's an astronaut in the sixties, is coming out in fall 2027! It'll be on Wildthorn, Tor's brand-new general fiction imprint -- a dream, as it lets me work with @englelaird.bsky.social on my literary and historical fiction as well as SFF.
- A small sign of the times: my downtown apartment that I'll be leaving in six weeks is advertised for a lower monthly rent than what I pay now.
- Reposted by memento mori (hot girl edition)Dozens of Nunavummiut braved the cold to stand in solidarity with Greenland and against threats of annexation by the United States. About 90 per cent of its 60,000 people are Inuit.
- Reposted by memento mori (hot girl edition)fantastic piece from my colleague @polgreen.bsky.social that gets at something i have been thinking about. what, exactly, is the administration's strategic goal in minnesota? what does "victory" look like for trump and miller?

- Reposted by memento mori (hot girl edition)Quite frankly, it’s outrageous that Mark Carney is cutting Statistics Canada. If he was Stephen Harper or Pierre Poilievre, I feel like this would be getting a lot more backlash. Carney of all people should know the importance of high-quality data and information about the country.

- 2026 is about embracing my role as a Tastemaker.
- My only 2026 resolution is to lean into how pretentious I am. Why yes, I do believe myself to have impeachable taste, and I will be smug about it.
- 2025 was the first since 2019 that wasn't Very Bad. In fact, it was frequently great. Grateful for friends, for an excellent partner, for art.
- Reposted by memento mori (hot girl edition)A soft, small, hopeful thing.
- My last book of the year. Flesh, by David Szalay. Bought this pre-Booker nomination (and eventual win) but only got around to it this week. Spare and circular. Dialogue that felt both natural and absurdist at once. I tore through it. It's excellent.
- Going to start asking men who play hockey "Oh cool - because of Heated Rivalry?"
- Reposted by memento mori (hot girl edition)ancillaryreviewofbooks.org/2025/12/22/a... Wonderful writeup in the Ancillary Review's 2025 Notable Books -- you can always rely on them to have some of the most thoughtful criticism in the field.
- As anyone watching this space has been saying for some time: Grammarly is a cheating machine. Might as well sell the enterprise to Chegg.
- Question for Christmas celebrators: does your family do stockings, and if they do, do they individually wrap the contents?
- My family wraps everything which no one else seems to do. It's fun!

- Been reading a lot of books lately, but none are delivering me the emotional experience I crave: feeling entirely unmoored from my own body.

- What a pleasure to moderate this conversation. Takeaways: joy, naivety/approaching your work like an amateur, integrity - all sit at the foundation of creative work that lasts in a world designed to make it seem disposable.
- Thanks again to the brilliant @terrorcamp.bsky.social team - especially @tchotchke.bsky.social, whose vision and inventiveness bring such momentum to this act of community-making.

- I just finished listening to Sarah Wynn-Williams' Careless People, which was fascinating but largely frustrating, because most of the people exhibiting some on the work workplace behaviour you've ever seen will experience no meaningful consequence their whole lives.
- Even understanding the context in which the book is written, it's clear Meta is a company run by absolute ghouls who shouldn't be allowed to run an elementary school bake sale, let alone one of the most powerful companies on earth.

- Anyway. There's still good stuff about the Internet. At @terrorcamp.bsky.social on Sunday, I'll be chatting with Edward Berger (The Terror, Conclave, All Quiet on the Western Front) & Florian Hofmeister (The Terror, Tár, True Detective). Have questions, check out the link in my last Re-post.

- Instagram has started to prompt me (aggressively and not entirely clearly) to turn on location services while using the app and if it weren't the only place to get information about a plethora of local businesses I think I'd be done with it.
- I want to connect with people I might not have otherwise met! I want to read great writing! I want to see your pets! And I hate that these platforms now hold these relationships hostage.
- A decade ago, I was entirely (and without irony) addicted to Twitter. I met my friends there. A lot of my social life ran through there. I thought it was a transformative tool. I was a Certified Poster. Now using any social media platform, even this one, leaves me with gnawing unease.
- Starting handmade Christmas gifts on December 1 was a real choice I made.

- Nothing more exciting to me when a friend reaches out for insight on an academic integrity/GenAI story in the news. I feel like an expert being called for an NPR interview. (cc @softoctober.bsky.social)
- A cool thing is having so much fun with the person you're dating - and have been dating for some time - that you can't wait to see them again so you can goof off some more.
- Reposted by memento mori (hot girl edition)I think if Canada wants to have a strong cultural identity we need to go back to doing what we're best at, making the weirdest fucking TV shows you've ever seen
- Has anyone else been reading Lockwood's latest (Will there ever be another you) and finding it a slog? I loved her two previous books. But for this one I'm fighting to finish a single page. I'm bummed!

- A nice Toronto moment. I decided to take the foster dog to Bloor street for a morning walk, wondering if the marathon had started. Just as we hit the corner the very first group of runners went through. It was exciting! Something I'd never seen before.

- This should say "Nobel" - no lit prizes for me, I suppose
- The extent to which my sense of humour has been largely massaged into its current state by spending 15 years on tumblr cannot be overstated.
