- I don't know maybe I'm insane, but afaik we know by now that avoiding hallucinations where an llm is in the background is mathematically impossible. Which means any transcription would have to be double-checked by hand. Which in turn defeats the purpose of using a tool like that in the first place?
- I frankly also really have always enjoyed transcribing historical handwriting and music notation, and felt like students enjoyed learning it as well, especially when I've put them in groups and had them work on actual sources. Also imagine the amount of extra steps on a normal archive day. You'd
- have to photograph every page you come across and wait for an llm to process it and only then you can parse what's on the page and decide whether it's what you're looking for. I fail to see any benefit even in the long run vs. investing the time to learn to read old handwriting yourself.
- I guess if you had a huge corpus that was already scanned and available online in decent enough quality, you could run in through transkribus and do a full text search for keywords? But then again, I'd personally be too paranoid about missing something even then.

- A. S. Byatt's "Possession. A Romance." I will never ever stop recommending it to anyone who does cultural history in any way. Shortest pitch I can give: it's a book about how, when we do history, people get in the way, both the living and the dead. And it's messy and beautiful and complicated.
