Listening to a new (to me) album, every day
- Y2D36. Fionn Regan: 100 Acres of Sycamore Gorgeous folk and strings album, with gentle vocal style and a consistent warm and enveloping atmosphere. Discovered via Shazam and Normal People. Feeling very chilled. 8/10
- Y2D35. Bonnie Raitt: Longing in Their Hearts Classy country/blues album. She has a great voice- highly emotive. The musicianship is fabulous with all sorts of styles and collaborators including a Ruttle! 8/10
- Y2D34. Cast: Yeah Yeah Yeah I liked the previous album (7/10) but somehow this just doesn’t do it for me. The production seems to flatten everything out. Maybe the songs aren’t as strong. 6/10
- Y2D33. The Black Keys: El Camino Same territory as Kings of Leon, lofi guitars and distorted vocals, but an interesting amount of variation across the album. Will listen again. 8/10
- Y2D32. Camel: Moonmadness I’m very familiar with Snow Goose, but hadn’t explored the rest of their catalogue. This is a gentle record with very straight Moog solos, some nice clear lead guitar, wan vocals, but little to get the pulse racing. Inoffensive. 6/10
- Highly recommended!
- Circu5 are playing a one-off gig in our hometown of Swindon on Fri 20 Feb. Expect big riffs and weird time signatures. * The Victoria, Swindon * Friday 20 February * With special guest George Wilding * Tickets £11 (including booking fee) * Get tickets at circu5.com/live
- Y2D31. Only the Poets: And I’d Do It Again Billed as indie, but this comes across as uber-programmed pop with wobbly Sheeranesque vocals and homogenous backing. Sounds entirely unlike anything that would come out of Reading. Urgh. 4/10
- Y2D30. The Molotovs: Wasted on Youth Fabulous. The Jam reincarnated for a new generation. Arrives with the same burst of piss and vinegar as 50 years ago. Makes you want to get drunk and dance like a loon. Seeing them live tonight and hoping I don’t feel too old. 8/10
- Fantastic live too, though I’m concerned for my hearing.
