- This semester I’ve started taking attendance @ "Intro to Film" screenings by having students complete brief exit survey. They pick an adjective to describe what they watched and explain why. I make a word cloud and share at our next class. Here’s how my ~75 students described IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE.
- Here was last week’s for ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND ….
- And lastly (or technically firstly because it was our first screening) adjectives my students used to describe Asghar Farhadi’s A SEPARATION (2011)
- Anyone else ever think that Microsoft is trolling us with how utterly awful Outlook, OneDrive, and Bookings are? Why can’t I ever find emails? Why are permissions for OneDrive so cumbersome? Why can’t OneDrive handle large video files? Why are bookings incredibly frustrating to program?
- There are alternatives for all of these that are far superior and yet I’m forced to use these by my institution. If I had more money, I would personally pay to use other services (more Google Drive space, Calendly, etc.) but no Microsoft is trolling us.
- Signed, a harried professor who is forced to spend 2x amount of time on annoying tasks that could be accomplished so much quicker and with less daily frustration.
- Yesterday in Film History we watched BONNIE & CLYDE and I briefly lectured on New Hollywood. Did an in-class reading and discussion exercise I long dreamed of: comparing and contrasting initial Bosley Crowther and Roger Ebert reviews from 1967. Was really productive exercise!
- (Really wanted to do Pauline Kael’s but, alas, too long for in-class exercise!)
- Great film with titles sequence by some of my favorite animators — John and Faith Hubley!
- Obviously still thinking about this so...I just gave my gen ed “Intro to Film” students an extra credit assignment this week asking them to read, critique, and reflect on this essay in any way they’d like. I’m really hoping they take me up on it.
- I’m pleased to announce that the teaching moment I’ve been waiting for since the fall has almost arrived… ….get ready for THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS my Film History II students! If PTA thinks BATTLE OF ALGIERS is worth referencing in his film, surely my students will get excited….right?! 😂
- Feels especially topical given THE ATLANTIC article everyone is grumbling about! 😂
