Thinking about the politics of education systems & higher education
- Reposted by Katy NorrisIt would appear I am now a columnist at Inside Higher Ed. My first piece focuses on McCarthyism, censorship, and our current moment in higher education. This is an essay I started nearly 6 months ago so I'm glad to finally share it with y'all. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/colu...

- Reposted by Katy NorrisFrom an email to one of our faculty members.... Not even Plato can escape censorship at Texas A&M!
- Reposted by Katy NorrisWhat about “education polarization” though, often presented as the root cause of everything that is happening in U.S. politics – the closest thing we have to a widely accepted master narrative? Its impact is dramatically overstated; its implications are generally misinterpreted.
- Happy to see this amazing research out on housing and voting behavior from @joshgoddard98.bsky.social ! 🥳
- Really excited to share my new article published in @electoralstudies.bsky.social! 1/7

- Reposted by Katy NorrisA dangerous new policy requires a campus President's approval for profs to teach race & gender topics in Texas. "It strikes at the heart of what education means...which is circulate the exchange of knowledge without fear of retaliation.” — Rana Jaleel, AAUP Chair of Committee on Academic Freedom
- Reposted by Katy NorrisThe Education Department has hired at least 9 people from the America First Policy Institute, co-founded by Secretary Linda McMahon. The think tank’s listed goals include ending the separation of church and state and “plant[ing] Jesus in every space.”
- Reposted by Katy Norristhe minute universities start using class preferences, reactionaries will sue them because the actual goal is to make elite institutions inaccessible to everyone other than rich white kids
- Reposted by Katy NorrisNEW: A nearly 90% funding cut proposed by the Trump administration would likely shut down and devastate the 37 tribal colleges and universities created to serve the students disadvantaged by the nation’s historic mistreatment of Indigenous communities. - Reposted by Katy NorrisMarco Rubio says that Americans living in Europe shouldn't ever have to face any ramifications for their political speech online. The chutzpah is jaw-dropping, as he is PERSONALLY trying to deport legal immigrants for their political speech in the United States.
- Reposted by Katy NorrisWe’re witnessing innovation and an expansion of state violence in response to student protests but it’d be a mistake to believe this is a knee jerk reaction to protest rather than a long standing goal. apnews.com/article/f5cf...
- Reposted by Katy NorrisDHS just detained a Columbia student who helped lead campus protests—a direct attack on campus activism. This timeline shows why authoritarians fear student protests: they're often the first and most effective catalysts for pro-democracy movements.
- Reposted by Katy NorrisThis new Trump Dept of Ed letter is so vaguely and tendentiously written that it can be plausibly interpreted as banning Black Student Unions. And colleges are supposed to comply with it within fourteen days. Of yesterday.
- Reposted by Katy Norris🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.
- Reposted by Katy NorrisBREAKING: Trump signs an executive order that attempts to restrict all schools that receive federal funds from protecting trans and nonbinary students or supporting diversity measures, while at the same time purporting to advance "patriotic education." www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...
- Reposted by Katy NorrisInteresting time for universities like mine to proudly declare their political neutrality. As the saying goes, you can pretend not to care about politics, but politics certainly cares about you. Now more than ever, universities need backbone—and leaders willing to stand up for them.
- Reposted by Katy NorrisWIC. They are pausing WIC. That's the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Last time I checked (a while ago), every dollar spent on WIC produced over a dollar in savings *in the same fiscal year.* For most people, though, feeding infants and mothers is enough.
- Reposted by Katy NorrisYep. This is one of the most radicalizing pieces I ever wrote, about my own high school. Silver-bullet, top-down Bold New Ideas are never going to work. Effective approaches are slow, make significant investments and ask teachers what they need. psmag.com/features/the... bsky.app/profile/ogda...

- Reposted by Katy Norris3⃣ Today, the original objective of disciplining children remains at the core of how most schools operate. The future of education systems—and their ability to promote individual autonomy—hinges on acknowledging this troubling history
