Sigh.
The reason that recent signed books are not very valuable is because in America, there are more people trying to make a profit on signatures than there are people who appreciate them.
Someday, if you keep it in perfect condition, your newly signed book will be worth... the jacket price.
I thought people went to book signings to get a quick guaranteed opportunity to say hello and thank you to the author, get something nice memento to keep and not to sell?
It’s like I have many collector edition CDs, and they’re worth maybe a buck now. But I bought them for me to keep so who cares?
Exactly. Exactly this. The signature (and in some cases the book itself) is an ice-breaker. For $18 plus a short wait in line, you can have a brief yet real encounter with Glyn Maxwell, or Cory Doctorow, or Nicole Terez Dutton, etc. Try that with a pop star.

I was at an event where an artist was selling his book and prints. One of my friends was thumbing through the stacks and found himself drawn as a superhero!
Turns out the artist had seen him online for real, so the book was free & signed “I’m a fan” on his page. 😂
