  It never was. The Democratic party WAS the party of the Klan. The civil rights act WAS ratified by the Republican party JFK just happened to be president at the time. Party loyalists viewed it as betrayal and formed Dixiecrats GOP welcomed them and Dems became "progressive" by default.

    I hate that we’re even using the term “purity.” People want a candidate who will stand up for people in marginalized groups, like trans folks and homeless folks. That’s not “purity.” It’s taking care of people. It used to be the Democratic Party’s position.

  The reason Dems don't progress much even when they hold power is they don't really have a progressive platform. They seem embarrassed when someone with an actual progressive platform sneaks through their vetting process (look at the lack of support for Mamdani).
