- I once tutored a student who was assigned a (Steinbeck? idr) story where a gangster was threatening a shopkeeper in this way. She could NOT parse his threats as anything but friendliness, even after I walked her through the signs that all the "I want the best for you" stuff was insincere.
- Finally she said, "I don't understand when people are doing this in real life, either", and my heart broke for her. I think this particular person had issues specific to herself, but I often wonder if the whole world (and definitely Bluesky) is turning into her.
