- Nude photos. The names and faces of sexual abuse victims. Bank account and Social Security numbers in full view. All of these things appeared in the mountain of documents released Friday by the U.S. DOJ as part of its effort to comply with a law requiring it to open investigative files on Epstein.
- That law was intended to preserve important privacy protections for Epstein’s victims. Their names were supposed to have been blacked out in documents. Their faces and bodies were supposed to be obscured in photos.
- Mistakes, though, have been rampant. A review by The Associated Press and other news organizations has found countless examples of sloppy, inconsistent or nonexistent redactions that have revealed sensitive private information.
- 100% Had Legal Status or Status Pending: The supermajority are U.S. citizens; others are permanent legal residents or pending legal status Documents Ignored: Passports, green cards, and IDs dismissed or not examined No Warrants: Apparently none were shown warrants authorizing their detention
- Racial & Religious Profiling: Somali and Latino communities and individuals targeted based on appearance Physical Force Used: Handcuffs, shackles, headlocks, weapons pointed at civilians Masked Agents: Federal agents in most or all cases wore masks
- The complaint alleges that “masked federal agents in the thousands are violently stopping and arresting countless Minnesotans based on nothing more than their race and perceived ethnicity irrespective of their citizenship or immigration status, or their personal circumstances.”
