- #MutualAid Warning: @farronox.bsky.social is currently attempting to gather 600,000 USD to purchase an entire house, instead of, for example, trying to move into an affordable apartment.
- And the final word about this individual (unless something else major comes up): they have "acted with compassion" by calling upon others to false report this account, wasting everyone's time. bsky.app/profile/farr... Classy.
- Normally, it is frowned upon to judge people for how they spend their money. But people like this waste theirs and then claim #emergency to be handed more. To continue wasting it. Enabling those people is telling them that it's okay to grift, and further strains those in real need.
- But it's not always obvious. Watch for skimmers. e.g. "I need $1k this month!" (Then it turns out they only needed $500, the rest is spent on non-essentials.) We should encourage, if not require, receipt sharing for high-amount crowdfunds. #mutualaid is for needs, not wants.
- #MutualAid Warning: @laurabeltran2001.bsky.social is using #mutualaid to advertise commissions without an immediate need for assistance. bsky.app/profile/laur...
- As will probably be reiterated many more times in the future, #mutualaid was intended for immediate and emergent needs. Not simply to bolster sales or to fish for engagement in a pool of individuals who are actually struggling.
- #MutualAid Warning: @mavisdeluna.art (who has also fittingly pre-blocked us) is using #mutualaid to ask for donations to "get ahead," which is apparently more important than the immediate needs of others. bsky.app/profile/mavi...
- As a reminder, #mutualaid was intended as a potential relief for immediate and emergent needs. Not a place to seek hand-outs you want and don't yet need.
- #MutualAid Warning: @anplushie.bsky.social, who has fittingly pre-blocked this account, is using #emergency to push an Amazon wishlist half-full of junk food with no nutritional value. Is it the golden Oreos or the $40 worth of Twix bars that are part of your emergency? bsky.app/profile/anpl...
- Disregarding the total value of non-essentials being asked for, $40 could buy you high-quality meat, bread, and cheese for 2 weeks. Or multivitamins. Or a very large amount of vegetables. Things one might normally consider securing in a proclaimed #emergency situation versus... candy.
