I just ask people. I work with alot of folks from at risk communities so I can usually vibe when someone doesn't want their picture taken.
I have less issue w/ anarchists than I do students, because some DESPERATLY want to be filmed and collaborated with, while the one next to them wants none of it
It would be interesting (and maybe useful?) to hear from experienced movement documentarians and journalists about how they understand the boundary between reporting on a story/obligation to film vs engaging in tactics to directly support organizing
Feb 4, 2026 01:43That being said, I've mostly stuck to labor sponsored events since Trump 2.0, I don't know the local folks like I did on the east coast - I'm lucky we got alot of good humans to cover LA/OC so I can focus on my health and my job.
Also I'm better at talking to anarchists, of which I have many friends, than students, all of whom terrify me.
