- NEW: Keir Starmer on Peter Mandelson- “He betrayed our country our party and our parliament. He lied to my team repeatedly. I regret appointing him.” Says he’s asked the King to remove him as a privy councillor.
- Have written about how the Epstein files could yield one of the most serious political crises of confidence in British politics since Profumo. They are both revelatory of the realities of elite political power. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...
- NEW: Huge moment in the Epstein story in the US. Bill and Hillary Clinton give into Congressional pressure to testify before the House Oversight Committee Epstein investigation Will be the first time a former president has appeared before Congress in nearly half a century.
- Worth noting, Hillary Clinton has said she never met or even spoke to Epstein.
- Of course the PM doesn’t have the power to unilaterally remove Mandelson from the Lords. But given it can only be removed via an act of Parliament in government time, Starmer is hardly powerless, indeed he is the only person who can make it happen.

- LATEST SUBSTACK: Why does Kemi Badenoch want…fewer voters? And what does it tell us about the British party system? open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...
- Spoke to Shleagh Fogarty yesterday sbout why the Chancellor is wrong: our “student loan” system is not remotely fair. It’s regressive and embedding inter and intra generational wealth inequality. It’s not a loan system, it’s a bad grad tax in all but name. youtu.be/uOC6Arrf2us?...
- Any government, but especially a Labour government should want to reform it. For the reasons I outline above.
- With student loans the UK government has become a loanshark. Trapping poorly paid graduates in decades of “debt” that they can realistically never repay. If it were a commercial deal the govt would be trying to regulate the company out of business.

View full threadAnd don’t get me started on the Osborne decision to abolish maintenance grants. The poorest students now borrow the most, carry debt longest, and subsidise the richest families who can pay it off quickly. Sounds like a sensible tax system!
