- Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.The President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, PPFP, has been a jewel in the crown for faculty development and recruitment at the University of California for years and the results have been an expanded faculty with almost 100% tenure rates — unprecedented success.
- As a past NSF GRFP recipient, I am disappointed with the last minute change to this year's competition. All students must now apply during their first year (instead of picking when they should apply apply - either first or second year). Read more here: laurenkuehne.github.io/grfpChanges/

Admin laid off teaching profs this summer & now are telling us that TT & tenured profs will be laid off & numerous #humanities depts closed. Who will teach the largest ever incoming cohort of #ducks this fall?

- Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.This is not surprising, but so appalling. About 180 FEMA staff members knew they would be risking their jobs to communicate the degradation of emergency response under Trump tells you how bad things are. We can't say we were not warned, but the people who warned us are being punished for doing so.

- Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.In the past month NYT has published 32 articles that mention Mamdani and “globalize the intifada", 13 that mention Israel's fake "aid" agency that's killed 800+, 5 on Israel's starvation campaign and two that mention, in passing, child amputees in Gaza. I argue this is makes no sense and is depraved
- Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.I haven't had time to say much about this case, dealing with "third country" deportations. But it's a terrible decision for all the reasons J. Sotomayor outlines in her dissent. She is probably the best justice on immigration issues, though wrong about much else: www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...
- Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.Sadly not a new phenomenon. Many veterans have been deported over the years, often because of drug problems they acquired after PTSD from their time in the service.
- Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.I'm still not over yesterday's obscene SCOTUS decision that our government can deport people to prisons in countries they're not from. How is anyone walking around going about their day?

- Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.One of the fundamental themes of authoritarianism is that people doing the right thing will be labeled as doing the wrong thing. And often, that label is applied by bystanders who are still failing to recognize that the institutions they once trusted are no longer trustworthy.

- Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.Khalil is challenging the other charge of removability (claimed misrepresentation) as First Amendment retaliation, but those claims are ongoing. Until then, the government does still have statutory authority to keep him detained. He does have a right to a bond hearing, though.

- Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.🚨🚨🚨 In the last two hours, the Trump admin: - Banned all immigrant visas from 19 countries, including Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela - Banned all student and researcher visas to Harvard - Colluded with Texas to kick 20,000 undocumented college students off of in-state tuition.
- 📣🚨 NEW ARTICLE: Many #immigrants are aging & remain undocumented. What is their experience of illegality as they age–specifically their fear of deportation? New publication @sfjournal.bsky.social! Please read and share widely. 🔗 here: bit.ly/SF25-LCI (summary below) /1
- I propose the conceptual model of #lifecourseillegality or #LCI to bridge research on migrant illegality & life course approaches. I emphasize how their social environment, spatial location, social networks, and individual characteristics shape the experiences of older migrants. /2
- Using past research & interviews w/older migrants in California, I argue that fear of deportation is a function of where one is in the life course. I identify three mechanisms that mitigate older migrants’ fear of deportation: the embodiment of illegality, life transitions, & temporal morality. /3

- Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.NEWS: It began with Mahmoud Khalil. Now the Trump admin is trying to deport *hundreds* of students by vaguely saying they have criminal records—making them guess why. Some have traffic violations. Some didn't even commit a crime. - Reposted by Isabel García Valdivia, Ph.D.Yes, it is entirely correct to point out that ICE officers do not have any legal authority to break into somebody’s home unless they get a judicial warrant; which they generally cannot do, because judges only issue warrants for probable cause of crimes, not immigration law violations.
