When the bird explodes into the air, he goes into full pursuit - whether I manage to knock it out of the air or not.
If I hit it, he proudly retrieves it and gently places it in my hand; if not, it’s time for short blasts on the whistle so he doesn’t chase the bird into the next county.
This is an old picture, from one of Logan’s first hunts. It was on this trip that everything clicked for him, and he came to realize what he was meant to do. I still remember watching that realization unfold, in real time.
Initially I thought the harness was the “help ‘em up” type for older dogs, but he has one in this photo too. Is it some kind of bird dog harness so their belly doesn’t get scratched?
Yes, exactly - it’s a heavy canvas chest protector, which he started wearing after needing some stitches from encountering some cast-off barbed wire.
He considers it his “fun vest” - whenever it comes out, he knows we’re going somewhere fun.
