Jennifer Polk
I live in Toronto and, since 2013, have helped professors, postdocs, & other PhDs who are ready to leave academia get meaningful, fulfilling jobs elsewhere. Ask me about my PhD Career Clarity Program!
Find me elsewhere online at https://fromphdtolife.com.
- Curler outfits leave much to be desired so far. Do I remember Swedes wearing plaid pants decades ago? Bring that back.
- You don’t have to be actively job searching to join my PhD co-working sessions. Many people are just… figuring things out.
- Baking a cake! On a Monday. Needs must. (I hope it turns out; will report back.)
- Doesn't look great but it tastes good!
- Oh wow, it is really good the next day.

- Reposted by Jennifer PolkAre you a professor planning to incorporate THE INTERMEDIARIES (medical #history, Weimar, #Jewish history, #transgender history, #LGBTQ fighting Nazis) into your course? I have pdf to share, additional teaching materials, images, and resources for use. Please ping me. wwnorton.com/books/978132...

- My Wednesday co-working sessions are quiet, low-key, and very human. No breakout rooms. No pressure. Just shared focus. #PhDSky
- Every month I run a live, interactive workshop for program members. They're so fun! Members can join live or access all past recordings and materials.
- RIP Catherine O'Hara 😭❤️

- Heated Rivalry, JenBot, and what’s coming up Dear Reader, I've got three quick things for you: Heated Rivalry, JenBot, and a program update. Scroll down for more info on what's relevant to you, or you can stop reading right now 😀 — First: Heated Rivalry (the TV show). Last week, I posted on…
- Some weeks, showing up is the win. That’s true in my Wednesday co-working sessions too.
- Dozens of accounts have blocked me for calling an unnamed man a misogynist, in case you needed a reminder about what we all know about the world.
- Reposted by Jennifer PolkWow. This is devastating. www.science.org/content/arti...
- Reposted by Jennifer PolkI wrote this in a moment of feeling over the weekend and have been blown away by the thoughtful responses. Resharing because I hope it can be as helpful for others as it was for me.
- Awful. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
- Ah, I'd forgotten how annoying it is for a post to go beyond the usual confines 😬
- Working solo but wishing you weren’t? I host free co-working for PhDs every Wednesday morning (ET).
- Just heard a man academic say "bless her heart" (negative) about a woman author whose books are all over the bestseller lists right now and that's it for me. I immediately stopped listening. Misogyny is gross and I have no patience with it. Do better.

- Reposted by Jennifer PolkDamn fine piece here and contained within it is the secret to making more hit Canadian television.
- Way back in 2006, I embarked on my first research trip during my history PhD. First stop? Minneapolis, to go to an archive at the university there. It was colder than Toronto that October and I had to buy myself a UMN gopher toque. I'll be wearing it in solidarity with you all this week.
- I like going out when there's a snow storm. Key point: I'm walking, or maybe attempting a subway; I'm not on the roads. It's interesting to get a glimpse of how folks around me react. Most of us in midtown are dressed for this! Plows have cleared roads at least 2x today, but not sidewalks at all.
- It's still snowing pretty heavily. Sidewalks must be fully impossible now for everyone.
- "On average, episodes in the six-part season were re-watched by a third of the show’s viewers on Crave, Bell Media says. More than 15% of viewers watched an episode five times or more." Happy Saturday to the other members of the 15% club 🫡 www.wsj.com/arts-culture... #HeatedRivalry

- Wow, it is nippy out there, eh? 🥶
- Is expertise beautiful? Why this matters for you Dear Reader, One of the frameworks I really like for PhDs and other academics going through a professional transition, including a potential career change, is the VIA ("values in action") character strengths. A bit different from workplace strengths…
- "But I do think the way women are positioned in Heated Rivalry is at least partly responsible for the show’s intense, almost cult-like popularity among women as well as gay men." www.vogue.com/article/a-mo...
