- A coherent moral philosophy provides a consistent framework for judging actions. Without it, decisions are ad hoc, driven by impulse, convenience, or authority, producing contradictory behavior and undermining any claim to ethical integrity.
- Consistency matters because similar cases demand similar treatment. A shared moral foundation allows one to explain why an action is right or wrong, rather than relying on feelings or outcomes selectively applied after the fact.
- Moral coherence enables accountability. If standards are explicit and stable, actions can be evaluated against them. Without such standards, justification becomes retroactive rationalization, and responsibility dissolves into preference.
