The artist Emily Jacir did a billboard project with the words “Translate Allah,” noting that Allah is the Arabic word for g*d, and when Arab Christians or Jews refer to g*d they also say Allah. Western media’s refusal to translate the word is a form of fearmongering. The same goes for martyr IMO.
I think they do this with idioms too, using overly literal translations to cast the speaker as alien or archaic.
