- 🦟 Can the Mosquito Bite? 🦟 The Multispecies Transmutation of Wolbachia Mosquitoes as Biotechnologies of Epidemic Control in Rio de Janeiro How does the use of a bacterium in vector control reconfigure biopolitical relations? New article at @estsjournal.bsky.social! #STSsky #AnthroSky
- Out now! With Salla Sariola and Matthäus Rest we argue for a more situated social analysis of microbes in our introduction to a thematic collection @estsjournal.bsky.social with fantastic contributions by @anthrobite.bsky.social @heymayahey.bsky.social A.Butcher, R.Soncco. L.Whiteley, V.Koski-Karell

- I should add that this research was only possible thanks to funding from @ssrc.org's International Diss. Research Fellowship (now defunct), NSF’s Anthro Diss Research Improvement Grant (status: ???) & @wennergrenorg.bsky.social's Diss Fieldwork Grant (the last one standing). Research needs funding!

- As I start advising grad students, I’m concerned by how little funding is available for their brilliant projects. Even if we change course (& that will take work!), the long-term effects will be devastating. WG noted this in their letter ending Sapiens to focus on research. bsky.app/profile/wenn...
- The Wenner-Gren Foundation has made the difficult decision to halt the creation of new content for SAPIENS Magazine at the end of 2025. Read President Danilyn Rutherford’s letter to our community. wennergren.org/article/sapi...

- "I have always believed that my duty is not only to liberate myself from the oppressor, but also to liberate my oppressors from their hatred and fear."
- Visited the fantastic Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture yesterday. In this moment, when things seem so hopeless and overwhelming, I needed the reminder that this struggle is not new. A luta continua!
- Tricked & taken with only the clothes on their backs, Brazilians deported from the US were also subjected to physical abuse: handcuffed, shoved, slapped & punched. The plane experienced multiple issues, with smoke coming from the turbines. Mid-flight, the AC failed, causing passengers to faint.
- Yes, #AnthroSky, join us at #AnthroCoWrite for some wonderful writing community. *Of course, folks who are anthro-adjacent, and other kinds of writers, are also welcome.
- As most other Angelines, I’ve been checking Watch Duty repeatedly these last days. It is indeed a great app! But one of the first things I noticed when I downloaded it was this hole in the air quality map! Not surprisingly, these areas are predominantly Black and Latine communities…
- Housing in LA is a nightmare—it’s going to get worse. If you live in LA city, remember there are rules for why & how a landlord can ask you to leave. I live in an RSO apt & stopped our landlord from kicking us out to turn it into an Airbnb—they wrote that in an email, which was not smart!
- We are relatively far from the fires, but I woke up this morning to the smell of burning. And there is a thick layer of smoke looming above us...
- If you're like me & are currently finalizing your syllabus, you should add this book to your course. Really. #AnthroSky #STSSky #MedAnthro My students & I had the opportunity to read a final draft, and it’s SO GOOD! It sparked thoughtful, thought-provoking conversations. Plus, it’s open access!
- My course had ANTHROPOLOGY in the title. I started the semester saying that it was an anthropology course & students would be expected to read—guess what—anthropology. Got my course evaluations & the 1st comment was: “The course is okay but there is too much anthropology.” lol WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?
- "The analysis also identified several changes that may improve the virus’ ability to bind to cells in the upper airways of humans, which largely lack receptors for most bird flu viruses" – but there is no evidence yet that the virus can transmit between people.
- "Officers can be heard yelling to Evans that if he tries to run, they’ll release a police dog on him. He didn’t try to run, but he was shot twice by bean bags rounds, and two K-9s were released, with one biting and wrenching his arm back and forth." www.kqed.org/news/1201785...
